As a followup to yesterday’s post about using a rolling briefcase or cart, you should *always* keep 1 hand free.  That’s the hand to carry your keys, open doors, catch yourself when you trip, and ward off attackers.  It makes absolutely no sense to me to walk around carrying all these different briefcases, packages etc. in *both* hands.  If you have both hands full you have to put something down to enter the subway, pay a bus fare, pull open a door or whatever.  And that’s when you are most vulnerable.  Just get a bigger case or whatever to hold everything (and if it is too heavy, either don’t take something or see yesterday’s tip.)
